Clonazepam, sold under the brand name Klonopin among others, is a medication used to prevent and treat seizures, panic disorder, and for the movement disorder known as akathisia. It is a tranquilizer of the benzodiazepine class. It is taken by mouth. It begins having an effect within an hour and lasts between six and 12.
Clonazepam, like other benzodiazepines, while being a first-line treatment for acute seizures, is not suitable for the long-term treatment of seizures due to the development of tolerance to the anticonvulsant effects.
In humans, tolerance to the anticonvulsant effects of clonazepam occurs frequently. The degree of tolerance is more pronounced with clonazepam than with chlordiazepoxide. Many studies have found that tolerance develops to the anticonvulsant properties of clonazepam with chronic use, which limits its long-term effectiveness as an anticonvulsant.
In such patients, alternatives to benzodiazepines may be preferable and may include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, buspirone, antihypertensive agents (Xanax), clonazepam (Klonopin), diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan)—listed among the top 100 most commonly prescribed medications.2.
Drugs with a long half-life Chlordiazepoxide (Librium) Clorazepate (Tranxene) Diazepam (Valium) Flurazepam (Dalmane).
Drugs with a short half-life Alprazolam (Xanax) Lorazepam (Ativan) Triazolam (Halcion).
It also may be noted in patients, such as the elderly, who have decreased rates of metabolism or greater susceptibility to central nervous system depression. 12. Psychomotor slowing may be especially profound following initial administration of a benzodiazepine or with a sudden dosage increase. 11 Studies of the psychomotor effects suggest that benzodiazepines slow reaction time and impair driving skills, increasing the risk of motor vehicle crashes in patients who are taking these agents.

I have been an insomniac since my middle 30s, Im retired now. In the begining I tried every OTC drug made, as well as herbal stuff (sleepy time tea etc.) . Nothing really worked very well at all. BTW my mid 30 son as well as my brother are all ins.
Still have a question? Ask your own!
I wish you well. Nothing really worked very well at all. No doubt a defective gene somewhere. My biggest complaint about Klonopin is its very long half life of 30 hrs. BTW my mid 30 son as well as my brother are all insomniacs so it isnt just me. My doctor originally put me on Dalmane ( a benzo) but it was a fast acting short lived drug, I only would get 2–3 hrs and then wide awake. Next came xanax that was better but still couldnt get a a full nights sleep. I have been an insomniac since my middle 30s, Im retired now. Including melatonin, that stuff made me yawn a lot but no sleep. Then it was Klonopin works great I take it about an hour before bed and by the time I get in bed 10 minutes later I’m out like a light. My problem is in the brain you have 2 hormones seratonin and epinephrin. If that is your problem nothing OTC is going to work. You could try it and see. just doesnt turn off, hence cant sleep. Being retired its very easy for me to sleep 10–11 hrs. Klonopin is a sedative hypnotic type drug even though it is a benzo. They l me my epi. A good nights sleep is a terrible thing not to get if its ongoing. In the begining I tried every OTC drug made, as well as herbal stuff (sleepy time tea etc.). Seratonin is the sleep part and epinephrin is the wake hormone.
